Everyone needs to get out and about every so often, but outdoor adventures have become a bit more complicated in light of recommendations from local governments and health officials. Avoiding densely populated areas and other explorers, employing safe social distancing practices, wearing a face covering and frequently cleansing your hands can all help ensure a safe, healthy expedition. Here are six socially distanced outdoor activities to keep you exploring safely.
Do some stargazing
When was the last time you really took a moment to explore the cosmos? From an open window or a nearby park, see what you can spot in the night sky. Crack open a stargazing book, download an educational astrology app, or grab a telescope or pair of binoculars. The sky will shift and change depending on date and time, so you’re sure to catch something new with each astronomical adventure!
Give your outdoor space some TLC
If you’ve cleaned and decluttered each and every interior room but haven’t yet tended to your outdoor areas, consider starting a TLC adventure! Invest in turning your space into an organized getaway by pulling weeds, clearing out the shed, cleaning the deck or trimming overgrown trees and hedges. Startup that compost pile or garden you’ve been dreaming of, while you’re at it. If you’d like to venture a little further, you can also clean up your neighborhood or surrounding area!
Take to the backyard
Get reacquainted with your backyard (or patio, if you happen to be an apartment or condo dweller)! You likely won’t run into anyone outside your immediate family and, with a little creativity, can see your outdoor space with brand new eyes. Pitch a tent in the yard, inflate a blow-up pool, light a campfire, do some gardening, or challenge family members to a friendly competition.
Go for a run, walk, hike or bike
Maintaining a 6-foot distance from others and wearing a face covering may be possible at local trails, parks, or in and around your own neighborhood. Double check your area’s safety requirements and get moving! Whether on foot or by bike, opt for a route or trail you’ve never done before to experience your neighborhood in a whole new way. Change up the path each time for near-limitless possibilities.
Go camping
If local regulations allow, and if you have access to legal, open areas to camp, pack the tent and marshmallows. Try to stick close to home as opposed to taking a lengthy trip, however. The small communities you may pass through are likely less equipped for outbreaks. If possible, drive straight to a nearby campsite, frequently cleanse your hands, maintain a safe distance when it comes to fellow campers, and wear a face covering.
Go for a scenic drive
Chart a route through nearby green space, or just your favorite part of town! You may not be able to get out and explore local shops, parks and attractions as normal, but a change of scenery – even through the car window – is sure to inspire. Remember to be cognizant of social distancing and face covering requirements and, similarly, try to avoid stopping for gas, food or otherwise in other communities.
Whether backyard campsite or across-town cruise, safely getting outside is critical for both health and happiness. Remember to consult local and state health guidelines before embarking on your next adventure and be sure to pack the hand sanitizer!
