Time home with the family can be both comforting and challenging. Little ones may be running rampant while those bigger kids could begin complaining of boredom. Banish that boredom and spend this time with loved ones creating memories to last a lifetime.

1. Bake a treat

Kids are always hungry. So, why not spend some time baking up a delicious and decadent snack? Cereal treats (think way beyond puffed rice bars) are quick and easy and muffins are always a hit! Get creative in the kitchen, then enjoy the spoils.

2. Do some reading

According to the U.S. Department of Education, providing children from birth to five with consistent, language-rich experiences – such as talking, reading, and singing – can have important benefits on their brain development and future school success. And, many libraries offer digital checkout and download options, so you can find new reads from the comfort of your own home – and for free!

3. Get competitive

Indoor volleyball, Monopoly, Texas Holdem… Anything goes on game night! If you don’t have a board game or deck of cards handy, play a free online game or invent something new! Make an official rule book and have each family member contribute.

4. Have a family movie night

Already paying for a streaming service or up to your ears in DVD’s? Get your money’s worth with a fun, festive movie night! You can grab a box of microwavable popcorn and a small array of movie theater style candy boxes for just a few bucks. Spruce it up by building a movie-watching fort or dressing up in character.

5. Pen letters

Missing your friends and family? Take some time to write some good, old-fashioned snail mail. Your family will love thinking of messages for loved ones and the recipients will adore opening their mail (it’s not too often the mailbox is filled with anything other than bills)! Penning letters help develop strong writing skills, improve penmanship and are such a fun, centuries-old tradition.

6. Create

Crafting is a fun, inexpensive way to pass the time, and there’s something for every age range. Homemade playdough only requires a few inexpensive ingredients, and origami cranes or paper flowers are a breeze with a couple sheets of printer paper!

7. Make cards

Speaking of crafts… homemade celebration cards can be a blast if someone you know has an exciting event approaching. Gather a few sheets of colored paper, glue, scissors and a dash of creativity. You can also scour the house for interesting additions, like sequins, lace or buttons. Even uncooked macaroni will do!

8. Get moving

Sing, dance, have a three-legged race! Just because it’s cold and the kids are cooped up, doesn’t mean there’s no opportunity for physical activities. Search for family-friendly dance or exercise videos on YouTube for a blast indoors. Safely stow all valuables, but be sure to incorporate movement into any night in.
