‘Tis the season for holiday whiplash! This time of year is known to fly by, so there’s a chance you’re already up to your ears in everything from pumpkins and fall foliage to wreaths. These holiday organization tips will ensure your trimmings are protected, regardless of what you’re celebrating!
Holiday Organization Tips for Décor and More
Gather anything that doesn’t span multiple holidays
First things first; collect decor that won’t transfer to the next holiday. This includes turkey motifs, fall leaves and any kind of gourd. Cozy, knitted throw pillows and festive, red berry branches can stay! They’ll play well with the coming Christmas decor.
Keep only what makes you happy
Regardless of time of year, it’s always a good idea to purge what you don’t love. There’s no point in storing decorations that will just sit in the box, so throw or donate anything old, outdated or just not your style.
Pack with care
Wrap anything fragile in tissue paper, newspaper or bubble wrap. When in doubt, add another layer! The last thing you want is a bunch of shattered ornaments or crushed cornucopias.
Choose a storage method
Plastic bins are a popular choice, as they’re airtight and easily stackable. Decorations will be safe from bugs, water and dust, and you’ll never worry about cardboard sagging or the topmost boxes falling down.
Choose an organization method
You can opt for color coded bins, and go with black for Halloween, orange for Thanksgiving and green for the winter holidays. Then, you can stack by color and easily swap past holidays for upcoming ones. Or, choose to organize by room. You can even take a photo of your set up and tape it to the corresponding bin so you can easily pull out and recreate next year.
Utilize space
Store small decorations in larger ones, neatly wind strings of lights and fold festive linens. Strategically packing each bin means less to purchase, store and lug around.
Label everything
Maybe the holiday, but certainly the contents. List everything inside each box, so you can quickly pull out and find what you need regardless of organization method.
Find a climate-controlled environment
Heat and high humidity will destroy wood and cloth decorations. Opening up a box of one year’s worth of mold or bug infestations won’t have anyone in the spirit.
Store mindfully
Hopefully your tree stand isn’t shoved back behind your ornaments… Be thoughtful when putting away decor and keep the first things you’ll grab up front. Keep heavier bins on the bottom, so you don’t hurt yourself pulling them down. Your future self will thank your ghost of Christmas past for your perfectly wrapped holiday organization.
Wrap up one holiday before starting another
Sorting a sea of ornaments, pumpkins and everything in between isn’t exactly in the holiday spirit. Ensure everything you need to put away is properly stored before tackling the next project. This will keep the right holidays in their respective bins and give you a clean slate for the next one!
