It’s a fresh, new year and we’re seeing interior design with brand new, 2020 vision! So, what’s here to stay and what’s SO last decade? Top home décor trends for the new year will include:
Color
Gone are the days of monochromatic kitchen color schemes and gray-on-gray bedrooms. We’re kicking off the new year in color! If you don’t already have a favorite shade of magenta or mauve in mind, Pantone’s 2020 color of the year, Classic Blue, is a great place to start. “Instilling calm, confidence, and connection, this enduring blue hue highlights our desire for a dependable and stable foundation on which to build as we cross the threshold into a new era.” Whether opting for an all-out paint job or pops via throw pillows, don’t be afraid to experiment with color this year.
Dark exteriors
Speaking of color… “Over the past few years we have seen a growing interest in dark colors for exteriors, with black being an unexpected yet dramatic and popular choice,” says Hannah Yeo, color marketing and development manager at Benjamin Moore. If you’re over last year’s white-on-white palette but can’t quite commit to the full color spectrum, you’ll still be on the pulse with something dark and moody!
Fun bathroom design
Smaller spaces are the perfect place to pilot bold patterns, new coloration and interesting materials. Plus, as interior design becomes more comprehensive, even the most practical spaces, like bathrooms and laundry rooms, are getting some additional attention. Wallpaper an accent wall or choose a unique tile to quickly pull your space into the new decade. Top tile trends to watch for include imitation rare stone, texture, speckle, blending and greenery.
Free-Standing tubs
While making over the bathroom, also consider a tub that makes a splash! According to Good Housekeeping, “38% of homeowners added or replaced a bathtub as part of their master bathroom project, and 50% of those folks chose a freestanding flat-bottom tub shape; another 9% chose a free-standing claw-foot tub” last year. Bathroom appliances are a great long-term investment and serious focal point, instantly updating any space. You’ll be soaking in style all year long!
Curved sofas
Style is cyclical and this year, we’re going back in time! Throughout the 2020’s, “We’ll see some ‘60s and ‘70s throwbacks with a modern twist and a focus on line and curve.” Curved sofas take up a bit more floor space, cutting down on fast furniture purchased for the sake of filling space. Classic, clean lines with an updated feel will also set your living room apart and define the look of your home.
Real plants
This year, faux plants are a faux pas! Artificial greenery has come a long way in recent years, but can still stick out and feel stagnant. Real plants grow and change over time, adding an organic degree and touch of personality to any home. Plus, a living plant, large or small, makes your space beautiful while improving mental health and overall ecosystem. This year, play around with a few creative ways to get back to your roots!
Low maintenance materials
Care intensive countertops such as granite may be a thing of the past, with many owners opting for lower maintenance materials like quartz instead. quartz tends to be more easily customizable, less expensive, more environmentally friendly, easier to maintain and even harder than granite. In a brand new decade, ripe with possibilities, who has the time to worry about staining or etching, anyway?
Personal touches
We’re leaving sterile, one-stop-shop design resources in 2019! Interior designers, professional and amateur alike, are mixing and matching old mementos, new purchases, locally made pieces, interesting art and travel souvenirs. In the spirit of change and new beginnings, shake your home decor up a bit. Blend old with new, add some personal touches and let the decor tell your story this year.
Top home décor trends for the new year
Experts seem to agree that home décor trends for the new year will lean toward warmth and meaning. This contrast to years past of modernized whites, grays, and simplified design will bring a fresh perspective to your indoor environment. Millennials may even start accepting family heirlooms again and incorporating them into the sentimental and colorful style that will be sweeping the nation.
