For many homeowners across the country, gone are the days of open windows and warm, summer breezes. Instead, it’s time to fire up the heater, clear the fireplace, or otherwise prepare for the cold winter months. But while everyone may be getting ready for winter, what about your home? Before the first big storm of the season, a little detective work could help identify and remedy any problem areas in terms of home energy. After all, when was the last time the HVAC system got a little TLC? Take these four simple steps for an energy checkup and start the season on the right foot.
Set the HVAC System Up For Success
First and foremost, it’s important to thoroughly inspect the HVAC system, or hire a professional to check it out (International Association of Certified Home Inspectors, 2012). This system will do the heavy lifting when it comes to heating a home this winter, and then cooling it as the weather warms, so it’s smart to ensure it’s in good working condition.
With each new season, homeowners should make a habit of cleaning or replacing old HVAC filters. Over time, they often become dirty or clogged and subsequently block effective airflow, so consider making this part of any regular home maintenance routine moving forward. Also, make sure to inspect all vents to ensure they’re clean and functional and move any furniture, decor, or other objects out of the air’s path. Then, dial up the thermostat and enjoy the warmth.
Cut Down On Drafts
Next, take to the windows and doors. Air leaks can expose a home to the elements and hemorrhage all the heat the trusty HVAC system is busy producing, so it’s important to get up close and personal with each and every potential draft (The Washington Post, 2018). Common locations include, in addition to exterior doors and windows, attic hatches, wiring holes, plumbing vents, recessed lights and chimneys. Make note of any drafts and get to work installing caulking or weatherstripping.
Add Strategic Shades
While checking the home, consider updating all window dressings. Depending on the location, sunlight may be in short supply during the long winter months, but a staggering 76% of the light that filters through your windows becomes heat (U.S. Department of Energy). To make the most of the light and help the trusty HVAC system, invest in a few thermal curtain panels. This simple fix can reduce heat loss by 10%!
Don’t Forget The Ceiling Fan
Finally, for perhaps the easiest fix on the list, inspect all ceiling fans. A fan rotating clockwise can produce an updraft, driving warm air near the ceiling into the living space. A counterclockwise fan, on the other hand, will create a wind-chill effect. As winter fast approaches, simply reverse the motor, then switch it back once the weather warms.
With a little detective work and some doctoring of any problem areas, any home can be looking and feeling its best for the cold winter months in no time. Don’t forget to add these tasks to the home maintenance checklist, and enjoy a cozy and energy-efficient home for years to come!
