This summer has seen record high temperatures, and record high AC use! But not everyone spends the dog days of summer inside.
If your pet is itching to get outside and enjoy the summer sun, you might want to take a few extra precautions in ensuring they stay safe. After all, heat exhaustion and heat stroke in pets pose very real risks.
From investing in a couple of pairs of pet shoes to building a cooling doghouse, here’s how to keep your pets cool during the summer months:
- Water activities
- Pet shoes
- Frozen treats
- Portable water bowls
- Cooling mats
- Grooming
- Cooling dog houses
- Cooling catios
Water activities
If you happen to have a backyard or even a shared green space, consider setting up some aquatic activities for your four-legged friend. Simply wetting their fur can be a quick, easy and fun way to keep pets cool all summer long.
You might fill a baby pool, invest in a splash pad, or even simply turn on the sprinklers. Then, add their favorite toys or treats for even more fun!
Of course, you’ll want to keep safety at the forefront and supervise all activities. Pets can become injured or, in the most serious situations, even drown if not looked after appropriately. If playing near any particularly deep water, always consider a doggy lifejacket.
Pet shoes
Did you know that asphalt can run a whopping 40-60 degrees hotter than the surrounding air temperature? That means that even on the coolest summer days, your pet’s paws are likely suffering.
A sturdy pair of pet shoes can prevent burns and blisters, limit skin irritation and even keep their little feet safe from debris like broken glass, metal and other sharp materials.
The best pet booties provide traction, allow airflow and come in plenty of sizes. Reflective features are a plus!
Frozen treats
Everybody knows that there’s nothing more refreshing than a cool snack on a hot summer day! Your furry friend is no exception.
If your pet is a purist, even a simple ice cube will likely do, but depending on the animal, you could opt for frozen watermelon, frozen banana, frozen peanut butter bites, and more. If you’re feeling particularly creative, consider crafting some DIY popsicles featuring a few of your pet’s favorite foods!
Portable water bowls
While they’re snacking, don’t forget something to wash it down with. Many pets are prone to dehydration, and the summer heat certainly doesn’t help.
Whether you’re taking a long, hard hike or simply strolling around the block, the first step to cooling down lies in having plenty of water on hand.
There are countless options for portable water bowls, but some of the most popular types include:
- Collapsible silicon options that are lightweight and low profile.
- Water bottles that dispense into a small bowl attachment.
- Fabric bowls that are machine-washable and easily packable.
Whatever your pet’s style, this summer, don’t leave the house without a water bowl in hand.
Cooling mats
Ensure your pet has a cool and comfortable place to curl up after a long walk in the hot summer sun!
Cooling pet mats contain water or gels that absorb body heat. You can expect five to seven hours of chillness and, once the pet gets up, they then release that heat into the air and quickly cool back down.
Other benefits include the fact that these mats are easily transportable, lightweight, and great for cats and dogs alike.
Grooming
A strategic grooming regimen could also help keep your pet cool this summer.
Simply brushing your animal on a regular basis can help slough off dead hair, improve circulation and keep him or her cooler overall. You can also consider giving your pet a haircut, cutting down on their natural insulation and the associated summer heat.
Keep in mind that fur is important in regulating body temperature, though. Some breeds shouldn’t be shaved at all, so research guidance around your pet specifically. If you do choose to shave, you’ll want to leave at least one inch of hair to prevent heatstroke and sunburn.
When in doubt, always consult an experienced groomer before reaching for the scissors.
Cooling dog houses
If your dog spends any time outside, you’ll want to ensure they have a safe, shady and cool spot to rest their head.
To cut down on heat, be sure to:
- Position the doghouse in the shadiest part of the yard or, if you don’t have shade, install roofing.
- Lift the structure a few inches off the ground to promote airflow.
- Use a breathable material, like wood, as opposed to plastic.
- Use light-colored paint to deflect heat.
- Ensure there is adequate ventilation.
- Place the bed as low to the ground as possible and maximize ceiling height, as heat rises.
- Add water, AC, fans or ice to keep your dog cool.
Cooling catios
Outdoor fun isn’t just for the dogs! A catio, or cat patio, ensures your feline friend can enjoy the summer months as well.
In addition to the above suggestions, to create a cooling catio, make a point to:
- Include a shade, canvas top, or umbrella, so kitty can get out of the sun as needed.
- Bring in some cat-safe plants, which can keep direct sunlight off their back.
- Provide plenty of water and change it out daily.
- Add ice cubes to water bowls or give them to cats directly.
- Provide easy access back inside, so pets can return to the AC whenever needed.
How to Keep Your Pets Cool During Summer Months
With particularly intense heat recorded across the nation, keeping your pet cool, comfortable and safe during the summer months is no joke. There’s no reason you and your pet can’t enjoy these dog days of summer, though! Whether snacking on frozen treats or running through the sprinklers, you can make staying cool just another walk in the park.
