Home Decor Trends 2023

Since the start of the global COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020, home decor has been a much more prominent hobby. As millions of Americans spent more time at home than ever before, creating a space that feels comfortable, relaxing and personalized became critical.

As the country returns to greater normalcy, these factors are still at play, but room for a little creativity is taking shape. Here’s what will differentiate the style icons from the rest this year:

1. All Things Vintage

While modern design has largely reigned supreme over the last decade or so, historic and pre-loved decorative pieces are now coming back in Vogue. Vintage and antique home decor items are favorites among interior designers because they add warmth and interest. They give your guests something to notice and ask about, particularly if you happen to know the story behind that vintage sofa or antique card table!

It’s also important to remember that shopping and owning vintage is also often synonymous with sustainability and longevity. As many Americans are still recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic, potentially saving some money while investing in something sturdy and well-built is a win-win.

To experiment with this trend, consider:

  • Mixing midcentury with your modern. Add a vintage throw blanket from the 60s or an Eames-inspired chair to instantly dial up your space’s cool factor.
  • Repurposing textiles. There are thousands of beautiful, unique textiles dating back decades to centuries. Consider creating some curtains, fashioning into pillows or even simply framing as wall art.
  • Exploring vintage lighting. Swap your builder-grade track lights for a fun and fancy chandelier.
  • Upcycling vintage pieces. Reupholster a thrifted sofa or get an antique print re-framed.
  • Exploring your local thrift stores, online resale sites and other avenues for fun vintage finds.

2. Tons of Texture

This year, expect to see texture, texture, texture nearly everywhere you look! Tactile items can quickly and easily add warmth and interest to any room, from stone-feel wallpaper in a bathroom to soft, knit blankets in a family room.

It can also help a space appear quite a bit more luxe and personalized. This is because rooms that lack texture tend to fall flat. They don’t feel dynamic, interesting or lived-in. Dialing up the texture in your space is one of the easiest ways to inject some personality and successfully bring your space into the new year.

To experiment with this trend, consider utilizing:

  • Tactile fabrics for your rugs, curtains, throw pillows, bedding, upholstery and more.
  • Wallpaper, panels, backsplash or beams to breathe life into your walls and ceilings.
  • Color and pattern, in harmony or juxtaposition, for visual interest.
  • Unique wall art, from sketches to photographs to 3D elements.
  • Vintage or antique pieces, as mentioned above, for instant warmth.

3. Pops of Color

Gone are the days of white-on-white and all beige everything! This year, work to incorporate some of your favorite colors into your home decor. Expert designers love working color into their spaces as they can comfort, inspire and influence us.

From wall paint to throw pillows to area rugs, 2023 will be characterized by an abundance of color.

Lucky for you, many color-focused organizations, from Pantone to various paint companies, release their own colors of the year. This makes choosing a modern, on-trend shade simple and effective.

To experiment with this trend, consider utilizing a 2023 color of the year:

  • Viva Magenta by Pantone, a bold pinkish red.
  • Spanish Moss by Krylon, a rich forest green.
  • Raspberry Blush by Benjamin Moore, a vibrant red orange.
  • Terra Rosa by Dunn-Edwards, a deep, rosy pink.
  • Redend Point by Sherwin-Williams, a blend of blush and beige.
  • Canyon Ridge by Better Homes & Gardens at Walmart, a pinky-orange.
  • Blank Canvas by Behr, a neutral, creamy white.
  • Vining Ivy by Glidden, a rich blue green.
  • Rustic Greige by Dutch Boy, an earthy blend of beige and gray.

4. Touches of Luxury

While casual and approachable design is still relevant, many homeowners will look to add some of the finer things this year.

Don’t stress just yet though. You don’t need to put in a pool or tennis court. In fact, touches of luxury can cost as little as just a few dollars. The key lies in making small, reasonable investments that will go a long way in making you feel even more comfortable in your own space.

To experiment with this trend, consider:

  • Ornate or glam accents, from wall mirrors to candlesticks to furniture.
  • Investing in a particularly special piece of artwork or furniture that caught your eye.
  • New dish or serve ware, to make entertaining feel extra special.
  • A tabletop towel warmer, to transform your bathroom into a spa.
  • Luxury window treatments, that make you feel like royalty while throwing back the curtains every morning.
  • A new vase and a bouquet of fresh flowers from the shop down the street.

5. Nature-Inspired Design

Biophilic design is essentially a bringing of the outdoors in. In other words, nature-inspired decor is expected to be all the rage in 2023.

Experts tend to gravitate toward biophilic spaces because they can mimic the beneficial effects of the outdoors. These spaces tend to be palatable, calming and of course, aesthetically pleasing. What more could you ask for this year?

To experiment with this trend, consider:

  • Letting the natural light in. Throwback the curtains, raise the blinds, and maybe even give your windows a good clean.
  • Placing mirrors and other reflective objects strategically. When positioned toward windows, they can effectively bounce natural light throughout the space.
  • Adding plants wherever possible. From houseplants to fresh flowers to eucalyptus hanging from the shower head, incorporate as much greenery as possible.
  • Incorporating natural materials. Stone, glass, linen and leather are all great choices when adding a biophilic touch.
  • Incorporating organic shapes. Curves, arches and scallops all evoke scenes of nature, while harsh corners and straight lines simply feel unnatural.
