Per the Small Business Administration, small businesses are “the lifeblood of the U.S. economy.” While these organizations may be small they are truly mighty, generating “two-thirds of net new jobs” and almost half of all economic activity in the U.S. Small businesses also help define neighborhood identity, stoke community involvement and keep tax dollars local. Now more than ever, it’s critical to show support for local businesses across the globe. Here are 10 ways to support locally.

Make a list

Do a quick Yelp, Tripadvisor or Google search to find small businesses nearby. You can even bust out the yellow pages! Jot down all the local places you could reasonably frequent and refer back each time you go to make a haircut appointment, pick up dinner or buy groceries.

Get delivery

If your favorite local pizza joint or coffee shop is offering a takeout or delivery option, consider placing an order whenever possible. Bonus points for ordering through the restaurant directly as opposed to using a third party platform, ensuring the small business keeps all the cash and retains their delivery staff.

Shop online

Between simplifying the process down to a few taps on a screen and online stores never really ‘closing’, there are few things more convenient than online shopping. The next time you’ve got some free time, put that smartphone to good use! Many small businesses now offer online inventory, open and available even when the brick and mortar storefront may not be.

Schedule a service

Depending on your comfortability, local regulations and the small business in question, you may be able to schedule a service that requires little to no in person contact. Painters, landscapers, outside-only pest control workers and similar professionals can provide assistance without face-to-face contact. Other professionals, like interior designers and home inspectors, are now offering fully-online services as well.

Make a donation

Whether forgoing a refund, donating to a crowdfunding page or simply sending a little something, monetary donations can go a long way. Small businesses are integral to a healthy community so, if you can spare anything at all, consider it an investment in your neighborhood!

Spread the word

Leave positive reviews for your favorite places on Yelp, Google, Facebook and Tripadvisor. Share a Snapchat or Instagram story directing friends, fans and followers to each organization. You can also consider posting in neighborhood groups and other community circles.

Buy a gift card

If local small businesses are not in service now, hopefully they will be later. Purchasing a gift card provides the business with cash up front and allows you to come back and enjoy their services when possible.

Tip generously

Never tip less than the standard and, if you can afford it, consider throwing a couple extra bucks down. Staff members may not receive the same hazard pay or sick leave as their large-enterprise counterparts, so every dollar can truly make a difference.

Don’t forget to say thank you

An especially inexpensive way to show your support is sending a quick ‘thank you’ note or card. If you’re tight on funds, a kind email is always appreciated. Or, if you’re feeling creative, recruit the kids for some homemade cards!

Email your representatives

Support for small businesses starts at the top! For maximum effect protections and resources for these organizations should be mandated. A call or email to your local legislator could go a long way in supporting and preserving your local favorites!

Whether sending some cash or mailing a card, finding, supporting and uplifting small businesses you love is more important than ever. Despite their name, small businesses have a big impact on our community and economy. Take some time to truly show your appreciation!
